Xia Wang sat on a rolling stool in the middle of her workshop. She was 8 months pregnant so currently she was about the size of a smart car. This basically took away any ability to move about freely, so her stool would be her method of transport for the next month. Her size also made it impossible for her to slide under cars, something that she couldn't do since she hit the second trimester. So she employed an assistant. Olivia Long worked hard enough to live (ha) up to Xia's standards. But there still was some teaching going on.

"Okay, tell me what you see." Xia requested

If you told seven year old Olivia Long, who loved being called princess and loved wearing the traditional dresses, that she would become the assistant to a mechanic she wouldn't believe you. If you told twelve year old posh Liv Long that she would get oil on her constantly she would laugh in your face. But here she was, under some person car with oil and other substances dripping on her face.

Xia sighed, "Liv, you're going to have to be more specific. Since I can't see down there you're going to have to be my eyes which means being descriptive. By jammed do you mean something is stuck in the pipes? Or something won't move?" Okay she had to do something, sitting and waiting for stuff to happen was agonizing. She could already predict that her labor was going to be the longest thing ever. She rolled her chair over to one of her many worktables where an old clock sat. One of the elders brought it in for her to fix, after spending ten minutes complaining about how she should not be working when she was this pregnant.

Olivia sighed exasperatedly, her arms flailing out from under the car. Liv never said she was very good at being a mechanic, she just understood a few technical terms and knew what the tools looked like. She never really thought that when Xia was eight months along she would have to do some actual work the required knowledge.

"There's something in between these two things...I don't know they're names Xia."

Xia put down her screwdriver and turned around, "Well if its not supposed to be found in a car you need to get it out. Can you get it out with your hands or do you need to cut it up?" Let's be real, if Xia was under the truck she probably would've gotten whatever it was out by now. But she wasn't under the car. Because she was too big. Moving on. Liv was the next best thing since there hasn't another mechanic in this god forsaken town since Elder Kun retired.

"It looks like a chessboard." Olivia replied. Honestly it didn't surprise the princess that there was a chessboard jammed under the car. She sees so many people playing chess in a day than you think would be normal. "I don't know like I need scissors or something I don't know I suck at this.

"Jesus how do people get chessboards under cars?" Xia grabbed a pair of scissors off the wall and wheeled over the car, tossing it under. She laughed slightly at Olivia's frustrated comment, "Don't worry you're still learning. It was hard for me my first year too. A good lesson in life is knowing that you won't be at the top right away, you have to work for it."

Olivia Long was not a big fan of being imperfect, not being able to do anything, being useless, anything along those words. She can clearly hear the elders in her ear whenever she messes up a stanza in one of the scrolls. You'd be lying if you didn't think the elders were remotely scary. Even as a child Olivia didn't see the old bags of wrinkles as happy grandparents as young children are supposed to see old wrinkly people. She saw them, along with a lot of the adults, as people she needed to impress. She could be empress someday, empresses shouldn't fail.

"Okay mom," Liv teased, taking the scissors to start gabbing at the lodged chess board. "Xia you probably came out of the womb with a wrench, just saying." So maybe she was a little bitter. Olivia just preferred getting things right on the first try, is that so bad? Perfection isn't bad its just an overall goal that she has and that she needs to fulfill or she feels like she is a dumb dumb doorknob. No one wants to feel like that, obviously.

Xia laughed, "When I was fourteen I tried to repair my bike and ended up bending the chainring so badly that I had to buy a new one. Do you know how hard it is to bend a chainring on accident? I learned through making mistakes, and help from Elder Kun." She rolled her stool back over to her workbench, "Its all about hard work, Olivia. When you work for me I don't look for perfection but progress" She started to work on the clock a little bit more, unscrewing a screw that had been stripped.

"No, I don't know because I don't know what I'm doing" She cried out in frustration, yanking out the chessboard out of the car and threw it. She sighed, pulling herself out from under the car and smudged the oil that close to entering her eye.

"Sorry," Another thing Liv was good at was teenage outbursts. It will be helpful for Xia later when her kid is a teenager. Olivia called herself a prototype. Though she's not exactly what a teenager should be like. She has too much experience with discipline and princessy duties. Not exactly practical.

Xia raised her eyebrows, she wasn't used to outbursts like these. She wondered if this is how Kevin felt when she was going through her mood swings at the beginning of her pregnancy.
"I think you're doing pretty well. You were able to figure out what the problem was, know what tools you needed to fix it, and complete the job." Xia grabbed the keys off the table and tossed them to her, "Let's see if the thing is fixed"

Liv became flustered, holding her hands together as she stood on the other side of the car. She could feel her cheeks turn a light shade of pink. She liked now nice complements felt when you get them. Like they roll of the person's tongue and into your brain and you just feel all mushy inside.

Xia pointed to her belly, "Have you seen me? I won't fit in there." It was true she didn't fit in a lot of places at the moment. It was hard for her to do a lot of things at the moment. Just one more month...

I knew that. I was just asking Excuses, excuses. Liv opened the car door and turned the key. A low hum of the engine started, making a small smile appear on her face This is good, right?

Xia nodded, "Yeah, it sounded like crap when I brought it in." Ok, to be fair it was mainly the engine that was the issue, and Xia had fixed that earlier. The thing under the car was a big problem too though, and it was a good stepping stone for Liv. Xia hoisted herself up onto her feet, taking a moment to steady herself before reaching across the workbench to grab the cordless phone. "Ok I need to call Dr. Wen and tell him that his car is ready, you do whatever." And with that she walked into the next room to make the call.

Leaving Liv in the room alone was not the smartest thing that Xia could have done. She was a little nosy...more like she was just super nosy and curious about the lives of other people and such. Anything that didn't represent palace life was interesting to her. She moved over to Xia's desk, spying green sticky notes on clocks, toys, and staplers that all had a thin coating of dust over them. She remembered the one clock off to the side with the faded green sticky note. Xia timed her while she tried to fix the stupid gears in the clock, took her 20 minutes and she broke several nails. She had to blame Ava so her mother/elder beings wouldn't notice that she had a job outside of aesthetically pleasing eye candy for the palace. Honestly her dad believed her because after that one time Olivia was sure that he was scarred for life. But that clock was fixed weeks ago, more importantly. Xia are you a hoarder? Liv called out innocently to her instructor, trying not to laugh.

When Xia returned she found Liv poking around at the stuff that lined the work benches, most importantly the pile of fixed things. Xia smirked, "If i were a hoarder that would mean I wanted this shit. No, people bring stuff in for me to fix it, i fix it and then I tell them to come pick it back up and pay me, and they never do. So it sits here until someone realizes that there used to be a clock on that mantle or that they haven't seen that blender in a while and they come by pay me take the stuff and leave until they have more crap to bring back. And it goes on and on and on." Xia made a circular motion with her hand.

Xia shrugged, "Thats been here longer than I've owned the place. Maybe they brought it to Kun when he ran it? Like I said, people forget stuff. You're welcome to go through it all and set out to return it. " Xia sat back down at her workbench and went back to work on the clock that was brought in.

Liv didn't think her mother cared that much for the vase, her father definitely didn't mention anything about it to her after she was 8. She moved over to Xia's desk and pulled up a discarded chair. the dead silence allowed the princes to have questions buzz around in her mind, clouding up her thoughts of anything productive. Honestly Olivia saw Xia as the cool mom, though she would never call her mom. Her real mother was so regal, so elegant, and here Xia was 8 months along and looked like she was ready to pop out of those sweatpants. Liv was comfortable both places, and each one got overwhelming. Xia Olivia started, pulling closer to the desk, Did you want to do this ten years ago? It was a burning question, in her opinion. Liv was 18, soon to decide to continue princessing to eventually become Empress or to go to a college and do something. Honestly she didn't know what to do, and if she asked her parents that wouldn't give her a straight answer.

Xia thought for a moment before answering "Well I knew that I liked fixing things, and that was about it. I've literally only had it together since I was 23." It was literally a changing point in her life. She left the marines, set up shop in a tiny town that she used to hate with the guy she loved and she worked it out. Now she can't imagine living somewhere else. Even the elders had their charm at time. It would be weird to live without Elder Lo's disapproving stare.
