love songs Empty

For once in her life, Maggie had started to pay attention to love songs. The way the words just flowed beautifully, swirling around like they belonged in Van Gogh's starry night. They felt like magic. Like she could close her eyes and feel the wind pick up her hair and feel her senses grow stronger and stronger. The flowers were brighter, the pinks and reds kept catching her eyes.

Poetry didn't feel so stupid now. She could understand what Lord Byron meant when she wrote "She walks in beauty, like the night. Of cloudless climes and starry skies." Because she could see it. The long brown hair, that flowed like silk. The eyes that were full of expression, the way that she could access the girl's heart, see what she was thinking. The smile that seemed to literally light up a room.

No wonder she had pulled the attraction of someone who got whatever he wanted. She never thought she could be jealous of Brett. Brett. The boy who turned red after standing too long in the sun. The one that pronounced Spanish like he was ordering something at taco bell.

Yet she saw the way that Carmen stood by him. It meant something that she couldn't quite understand. Did it give her a chance? Well, she could say she already had a chance, based off of what had happened that one night.

Oh, what a nice night it was. Everything seemed so fuzzy then, but her mind was able to make it into something crystal clear. That kiss was something else. She had kissed people before, at camp and at home. But nothing could compare to the way that Carmen's lips felt on her. The way she could taste the tequila and coca cola. How her fingers seemed to tingle at the touch. How Carmen felt so warm. So inviting.

Now it was a week later and they both avoided talking about it like it was something to be ashamed of. But why? Why was it so bad to feel this way? Why was her love so taboo? It wasn't fair.

She decided to refocus on how that night felt. And the poem returned to her mind.
"She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
"

She never thought a poem could so accurately describe how she was feeling. She clutched her ukulele tighter, before realizing she had the perfect tool.

So she began to strum out a melody, something similar to something from the wizard of oz. Over the Rainbow. It was one of the first songs she had learned, and she was going to use it.
"She walks in beauty, like the night" Her voice is somewhat pitchy, but she's not perfect, so who cares.
"Of cloudless climes and starry skies;" Her fingers strum the instrument easily.
"And all that’s best of dark and bright" She can see Carmen in her mind, practically glowing.
"Meet in her aspect and her eyes;" Oh her eyes.
"Thus mellowed to that tender light" She is the light
"Which heaven to gaudy day denies." The song is so beautiful, she hates to have it end.
